Self-doubt is one of the biggest obstacles our girls will face on their way to empowerment. This handout includes five ways to help girls fight off doubt.

Let the girls know that it is perfectly normal to use these tools constantly throughout the day. Eventually thoughts of doubt will decrease significantly, but the girls must make a commitment to use these tools for at least three to six weeks before they will notice a difference. Understanding emotions is vital in helping our girls understand how to effectively work through emotional situations. This activity is designed to help students understand where our bodies feel and carry emotions.

One of the most valuable gifts we can give to a girl is the opportunity for her to understand who she is as a person. Confidence and resilience (two important tools needed to navigate life’s ups and downs) come from knowing oneself. Oftentimes we spend so much time getting acquainted with the people around us that we forget to take time to become acquainted with ourselves. Here is an activity to use with girls to start them on the path to understanding who they are while helping them to build self-confidence and resilience.

This manifesto was created after listening to girls describe the ways drama has hurt them and/or their friendships. I ask girls to read through the manifesto with me, pausing to discuss sections as needed. Have each girl sign the bottom of the manifesto, keeping it in a visible spot. It serves as a reminder that drama is a tool of hurt and destruction and that there is a gentler, more graceful way of interacting with each other. It is up to each girl to be a leader.

This activity pairs nicely with our lesson about Sacagawea and her wisdom. It helps girls understand how wisdom can help not only yourself, but the people around you. One way Sacagawea showed wisdom was through her knowledge of plants and how the could help the group she was leading.
