Growing up in a time of racial tension and attempting to overcome polio: a tall order for any adult, much less a young African-American girl. But a journey that began with her covertly using a brace to practice walking ended in public triumph as her perseverance earned her several Olympic medals — and gave her a platform from which to encourage inclusivity even as she helped other young athletes.
